RALEIGH, N.C. (December 11, 2019) – Bobbitt is currently completing the structure for the Wake Competition Center Hockey facility at the Morrisville multi-sport complex that will be utilized by the Carolina Hurricanes. The Raleigh-based National Hockey League team announced last week that it will make Wake Competition Center its official practice facility beginning with the 2020-21 season.
The complex is being developed by Jeff Ammons, with Ammons Building Corporation serving as the project’s general contractor and New City Design as the architect of record. Bobbitt Design Build was brought in by Ammons for its expertise with pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB).
As with previous projects, Bobbitt and New City Design Group have collaborated during the design process for multiple buildings in the complex. Bobbitt A&E worked with New City Design Group, Lynch Mykins Structural Engineers and Butler Manufacturing engineers to design the structural system that best met Jeff Ammons’ goals for the project.
The Carolina Hurricanes will use a 112,000-square-foot space that encompasses two NHL ice rinks, locker rooms, equipment storage, coaches’ offices, medical training areas, workout facilities and seating for 1,700 spectators.
Wake Competition Center features the recently completed volleyball and gymnastics buildings as well as facilities for ice hockey and skating, soccer and athletic training. “To get a facility like this, with the kids, the family, is a hub of activity in Morrisville close to the airport,” Ammons said last Friday. “All the connectivity we have here is important. Having the Hurricanes be part of that is just icing on the cake.”
Bobbitt is proud to be a contributor to this important community project. “Pre-engineered metal building systems are ideal for all three buildings at Wake Competition Center,” said Andy Speck, PE, Project Developer with Bobbitt. “While each building has unique features, Bobbitt was tasked with effectively and seamlessly integrating them into the building envelope while still delivering the advantages of the pre-engineered systems.”
